Lyricist:
Composer:

High noon, over Yangmei valley
Scorching sun burns the red clay steeps
Mountains of green and shimmering tea leaves
By the road are golden acacia trees
Scaling the hills of Chu-Chien City (Modern day Hsinchu City)
River of stars flows over the windy summits of the 18 Peaks
With an Amulet of safe travels granted by the Mazutemple
Granting me strength to traverse the darkest of nights
Hsien-Mei, be wary not of my return
Where the red clay trial is where Tongluo belongs
Hsien-Mei, be wary not of my return
Where the red clay trial is where Tongluo belongs
Swimming crossing Danaba river
The water that flows in front of the Wu family ancestral hall
When it makes its way here, it's off to the ocean
Over my knees and over my neck, the cold and chilling embrace
Hsien-Mei, I shall return
Where the river is cool is where Tongluo belongs
Hsien-Mei, I shall return
Where the river is cool is where Tongluo belongs
At the summit of Bagua Mountain in the morning light
Scorching red sun that burns like blood is bright
Fire is reaching toward the broad plains of the south
After traveling beyond 400 miles on the red clay mounds I will take a rest
Look at the black earth fields
So fertile and abound
These fields of the dry land will never
Pertain to the tasting brown sugar plantations
Hsien-Mei, never say that I don't wanna go home
Where the fire reaches where Tongluo belongs
Hsien-Mei, never say that I don't wanna go home
Where the fire reaches where Tongluo belongs
The harvest this year
Will need to be done by you women
Remember to marinate the vegetables when the winter comes
To let the sun dry out the sliced white radish, and store the rice in the barn
Hsien-Mei, I know that death is near
Seasonal scent of white radish and rice that you have reaped, will lead my spirit back to our village
of Tongluo

Note: The Japanese invasion of Taiwan in 1895 was a conflict involving Formosan insurrectionists, after the
Chinese Qing Empire's cession of the Island to the Japanese Empire as part of reparations of the First Sino-Japanese War. The leader Republic of Formosa, Tang-Sin Wu, fought the Japanese from the Taoyuan
plateau to Bagua Mountain, which coincide with the only area where red clay earth can be found in Taiwan.
By the time Wu and his men had reached Bagua Mountain, the majority of Formosan forces had been lost.
The Japanese would continue their conquest of Taiwan in a two-pronged approach that covered both
seaside and mountain settlements. Hakka forces Pingtung held out against the invaders in modern-
day Changzhi Township. Once they were defeated, the locals began to refer to the area of this battle as the
'Burning Village.'
Hsien-Mei Huang was the wife of Tang-Sin Wu.
