The Ruby Suns is the first full-length album from the New Zealand based band The Ruby Suns, first released by Lil' Chief Records in October 2005. The band was originally called Ryan McPhun & The Ruby Suns and the first pressing of this album was released with this title. The album was subsequently released in the UK on Memphis Industries in 2006 and in Australia on Pop Frenzy in 2007 with different art, and the title truncated to reflect the band's new name, as has this, the latest Lil' Chief pressing. The music itself is in many ways a homage to The Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, which is evident from the very first track. This album was more-or-less a solo project by Ryan McPhun, who was born and raised in California before moving to New Zealand and becoming a part of the Lil' Chief pop collective. However there are details throughout the album which give you a hint of what is to come later, in the form of the mighty Sea Lion.
